As the press release that came out today from BOOM! Studios reads: “When you think of a good horror story, you might imagine some kind of monster. . .However some of the scariest stories are the ones that hit home.”

If that sentence caught your attention as it did mine, you may be interested in upcoming horror title, The Empty Man. The plot revolves around an unidentifiable disease which possesses the mind of its victims and causes them to kill others and even themselves. The symptoms include, “fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, ‘empty’ state of catatonia.” As the disease spreads, murder cults began popping up nationwide and the same cryptic phrase is both seen and heard again and again: “The Empty Man made me do it.” YIKES. The overall series will focus on the rise of the murder cults and the joint investigation of the FBI and the CDC to determine the cause and the fight to hopefully some day find a cure.
In the press release from BOOM!, Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon explains why a horror story like The Empty Man will resonate with readers:”My favorite horror stories are of the grounded variety, balanacing terror with real-world human concerns. The disease and investigation that are at the heart of The Empty Man completely hit the mark. Combining of a bit of J-horror and a bit of the police procedural.”
The Empty Man will feature the creative team of writer Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Magneto) and artist Vanesa R. De. Rey (Hit). Issue #1 will hit stands on July 11.
